Ingrown ToenailSimple and safe solutions to relieve your ingrown toenail pain.
Ingrown toenails are a painful condition that our podiatrists regularly treat. Often we are able to provide you with relief from the ingrown toenail within the first consultation and without requiring nail surgery.
Ingrown toenails most commonly occur on the big toe when one or both edges of the toenail push into the skin. This can lead to redness, irritation and inflammation of the surrounding skin. Should the nail break through the skin, this will often lead to an infection.
CAUSES OF INGROWN TOENAILS
- Tight fitting shoes that do not provide enough width resulting in toenails being pushed into the skin
- Incorrect trimming of toenails
- Picking at toenails
- Trauma to the toes such as stubbing your toe or dropping a heavy object on them
- Fungal nail infections or psoriasis affecting the toenails which can cause the nails to become thickened or crumbly
SIGNS & SYMPTOMS OF INGROWN TOENAILS
- Redness, irritation, swelling or inflammation around the nail
- Nail cutting into the skin
- Pain around the edge of the nail
- Yellow discharge at inflamed area indicating a possible infection
TREATMENT FOR INGROWN TOENAILS
Most ingrown toenails can be comfortably treated by a podiatrist. If you believe you have an ingrown toenail, it is best to seek treatment from a podiatrist as soon as you start to experience discomfort. This will allow the toenail to be treated before it becomes more painful, infected and difficult to treat.
When the skin surrounding the nail remains intact and the pain caused by the ingrown toenail is due to a misshaped nail placing pressure on the surrounding skin, our podiatrists can painlessly trim the nail to relieve pressure and pain. It is recommended that you do not try and trim the nail yourself if you are concerned that it maybe ingrown. Incorrectly trimming the nail yourself will often cause the toenail to become worse and make it more difficult for a podiatrist to treat you.
In more severe cases where the nail has broken through the skin resulting in an ongoing infection or the problem continually reoccurring a simple and safe procedure can be performed in our clinic. The procedure known as a partial nail avulsion can provide a permanent solution to your ingrown toenail. Our podiatrist will use a local anesthetic so that you do not feel any pain during the procedure. Patients who have a partial nail avulsions are usually only required to take the afternoon off work and are able to return to work the next day.
